Towcestrians Derby Final
Final Score: 0-1
Towcestrians Rugby Club under 7’s Coalville Tournament victory!
With only one game under their tag belts against Bletchley the previous Sunday, which saw a victory for the 21 boys who travelled down the A5 to the Bletchley Club, the Under 7’s from Towcestrians Rugby Club had a feeling of happy excitement as they took the hour drive to Coalville to participate in their annual tournament, where in previous years the Towcestrians have had huge successes.
Having entered 2 teams into the tournament, Towcestrians took 19 super keen boys to the Coalville tournament. Splitting the teams evenly into the Knights and the Warriors, the first games kicked off at 11.15am. Both teams having a storming start, with the Warriors victorious over Melbourne A 7 – 1, with tries being ran in from Matthew Dryden 2, Oscar Wilde, Charlie Cousins 2, Noah Poole, and Ellis Harry. On pitches half the length of a full size men’s pitch, the boys showed great pace and skill to keep running. Equally the Knights showing fitness and speed, crossing the try line 8 times to their opposition Ashby’s 1 try, with Knights players, Ned Black, William Campion 3, Matthew Williamson 3 and Tom Holton all getting on the score sheet.
With both teams feeling the relief of getting their first win, the Warriors now faced Melbourne B, in a close battled game, ending in a 4-4 draw, with Oscar adding another 2, Charlie with 1 more to his tally and Ben Evans getting his name on the list as well. The Knights 2nd game was against the fellow Towcestrians team mates, the Warriors, which saw some exceptional play from both teams, sometimes making it hard to believe this was only their second week of playing real matches. The game was end to end, with some great tries scored, super running, and tagging which would have put the recently homeward bound England team to shame! It was clear to see in this game that the Towcester boys have been training really hard for the last year and all their effort had paid off. The final score in the club derby was 3-2 to the Warriors, with tries from Matthew D, Charlie and Oscar for the Warriors and for the Knights, Matthew W and Will adding one more each to their names.
The tournament was hotting up, with only the top 2 teams going straight through to a final and a play off for 3rd and 4th placed teams. So the Knights knew they couldn’t drop another point if they wanted to play for the Cup. With their third and fourth games against Melbourne A and B. They put out an amazing performance, securing them 2 victories, of 6-3 (V’s Melbourne B) and 7-1 against Melbourne A. Try scorers were, Matthew W 5, Will 3, Tom, Ned, Rory Hammond, Lucas Sanger and Ollie Comerford.
With the last game to play for the Warriors, a win would secure them a top spot in the group. Taking on Ashby were some tired legs, but the Warriors battled well and with Matthew D, Oscar and Charlie each touching down tries, they went undefeated in the tournament, winning the close game 3-2.
After a wait for the formal announcement, the Knights and the Warriors were set to play an all Towcestrians final. All the coaches and parents there were so very proud of the boys, and with the players ready to play each other for the 2nd time in the day, the whistle blew. The Knights started the brighter of the teams, getting 2 early tries from Matthew W and Will, Warriors then pulled one back with a great run from Charlie, then with some amazing support play from Ben in the Warriors team, he sneaked through to bring it 2 -2. Tom Holton then adding another try for the Knights and with the game nearing the end, Warriors went all out, putting Oscar through to bring the score in at 3-3 and remaining like that to the final whistle.
The others players who made superb contributions on the day were, Marcus Blackwell, Ben Groom, Thomas Pittom, Moreton Lund, Jack Brennan, Joe Brown.
The Club are very proud with the players and their effort and attitudes. Each one of them a credit to the club.
