Oadby Wyggestonians (H) - Lost 12-31
Final Score: 12-31
This was the first time the teams had ever met, having not had a fixture at mini rugby, and it proved an excellent game between two very strong sides, that saw both teams having extended periods of possession and pressure.
From the initial kick off Towcestrians moved the ball into the Oadby half and remained there for the first 15 minutes of play, creating a number of half chances that were not converted into points due to great defence by Oadby. The closest Tows came to scoring was when Ben Anderson crossed the line, but was ruled held up, so no try. Connor Frost also had a strong run to the opposite corner but was tackled into touch within a metre of the line.
Oadby grew in confidence on the ball coming up to half time and scored a good well worked try after 20 minutes, and then from the restart had a good period of possession and scored a second try just before half time, which was converted, to lead by 12 points to nil at the break.
The second half started as the first had finished with Oadby running the ball strongly and Tows missing critical tackles to concede a third try. 0-17. There then followed a much stronger period by Tows who drove the ball deep into the Oadby 22 through a number of strong forward runs and some excellent rucking. Thomas Hunt then picked the ball up from the base of a ruck and drove over the line to score. From the restart Tows controlled the ball well, moved back into the Oadby half and then released Joe Winterburn who made an excellent break down the left to round the defence and score under the posts. Solly Boyd then added the conversion to make it 12-17 with about 10 minutes to go.
The next five minutes of play were tight with both sides having periods of possession, but thanks to a very strong run by the Oadby No8 the visiting team scored again to lead 12-24. Tows were then pinned back in their own 22 metre area in the last few minutes of the game and in trying to run the ball out of defence were intercepted on the final play of the game to concede another try.
So the final score was 12-31, but did not really reflect how close a match this was was for much of the game.
