22/1/12 Bedford (A) EMCQF Won 10-10
Final Score: 10-10

An excellent game of rugby, between two very evenly matched sides that ended in a 10-10 draw, but which Towcestrians "won" as they were the away side and therefore go through to the East Midlands Cup Semi-Final.

From the start possession was equally shared between the two sides with play remaining between the two 22m lines, but Tows then exerted some pressure moved the ball over the Bedford 22 and were awarded a penalty. They chose to kick for goal and Solly Boyd was successful to give Tows a 3-0 lead.

Bedford then had a sustained period of possession and went through a number of phases before a determined drive down the right side, and quick movement of the ball to the left, gave their winger space to attack and beat the Towcestrian defence to score in the left hand corner.

The teams then traded possession a few times but with neither threatening the opposition line the score at half-time was 5-3 to Bedford.

Bedford kicked long to start the second half and Towcestrians cleared the ball back to the halfway line. It was well fielded by a Bedford player who quickly swept right and outflanked the Tows defenders, who were slow to react, to score a good individual try in the right hand corner. The conversion kick was a good one but fell just short, 10-3 to Bedford.

Towcestrians did not let their heads drop and enjoyed the majority of the possession for the next 15 minutes of the game. The set scrum was working well, ball retention was very good and slowly the ball was worked down the field and pressure put on the Bedford line. Good driving runs by Ollie Kilgallon and Josh Goodall failed to break the Bedford defence, and a good break by Adam Williamson did see him cross the line only for the ball to be held up. From the resulting scrum Tows moved the ball left and after a couple of rucks and pick and drives the ball ended up with Connor Frost. Connor showed great strength and determination to cross the try line and ground the ball, to bring the score to 10-8. Josh Goodall stepped up to take the conversion, succeeded and brought the scores level at 10 points all.

The final ten minutes of the game were again very evenly contested, but with most of the play in the Towcestrians half. However Bedford were unable to score again so the final result remained 10 points all.

Being a cup game everybody reached for the rule-books, and as Towcestrians were the away side the rules dictate that they proceed to the semi-final to meet Huntingdon away.
